29 August, 2006

We made sure the car was still there and went to find the Japanese consulate. It was also around the corner so I decided to get my Jap visa done then and there. We dropped off all the documents and headed to the Vatican. It was a fairly long walk since we were staying right on the other side. The Church was amazing- so grand and the views from the top of the cupola were incredible. Rome is such a beautiful city, almost every building being a perfect picture. We were too late to see the Sistine Chapel and so we had to return tomorrow. So we spent the rest of the day touring the many other sights. We walked past so many piazzas and churches and fountains and some of the most beautiful architecture and art in the world. We walked past the Roman forum and Palatine Hill to the old Jewish quarter and the synagogue was really beautiful with its stained glass windows and high ceiling. We had dinner at a very good restaurant in the old Jewish Gettho, the pasta was wonderful but the calamari was poor. We stopped at the Trevi fountain which is the biggest fountain in Rome on the way to bed and it was crowded with people. We must have walked about 15km and were now ready for a shower and bed!
