30 August, 2006
My Japanese visa was all sorted and we were off to see the famous Sistine Chapel. The museum was really beautiful and the Raphael rooms were amazing. The ceiling of course is an incredible sight and not to be missed at all. One can admire it for hours but the only problem is that you get a stiff neck. We left at lunch time and did our supermarket lunch again sitting by the river Tiber. It was very low, I guess they need some rain in Rome. After lunch we walked along the shady path under the trees towards a suburb called Trastevere. It is a gorgeous area to roam around and the restaurants look really authentic and well-priced. We continued to Aventine but could not find the rose gardens so we walked along Circo Maximus to the Palaitne (the heart of Rome). This area was where Tiberius and the emperors reigned. Below lie the ruins and the Roman forum which has now all been excavated. The Colloseum was our last stop and it was exactly as they describe it- Grand. We stopped at Trevi fountain again, had a delicious fruity ice cream (pineapple, watermelon and banana) sitting on the steps, and got back to the hotel. Dinner was at a restaurant in Via Napoli, can’t remember the name of it but it was superb. We had excellent wine and the pastas were incredible.
