21 September, 2006

We went back into Beaune town to look around and it was very pretty. The shops are full of interesting things and there are plenty of wineries. Unfortunately no free wine tasting! We visited Hotel Dieu which used to be a hospital for the very poor and dying during the Middle Ages. It was run by nuns and the tour takes you through all the rooms as they were in those days and it is extremely interesting. We set off to do the Cote D’or Wine Region. We stopped in a few little towns but we were a bit disappointed. The wine was not great at all, that is the white wine. We then went off on a circular route of the Haute Cote D’or wines region and almost everything was closed. This was the Best of Burgundy but all we found was their cassis (blackcurrant liqueur). That was really good so we bought a bottle for the Simpsons in Karlsruhe. The place where we found this liqueur was called “Fussey” so Rich thought it very appropriate and thought I should perhaps stay there. We drove and drove and finally found our way to Besancon and accommodation was full everywhere. We had to settle for a 1 star hotel on the main square – clean and large but the toilet was outside. I guess it could have been worse! We walked around the bustling town and there were so many youngsters and no oldies. The bars were so busy and guess what! Our hotel was right above one or two of them so that meant no sleep again. Our Toblerone from Geneva got me through the night.
