26 September, 2006
We decided to visit Terezin Concentration Camp so we took a bus which took about 1 hour to get there. We arrived in the town and went straight to the Ghetto Museum. It was very informative, lots to read and loads of pictures. We walked through the town which felt very strange. The buildings are dilapidated and there is an eerie feeling looming over. It feels and smells like death all around and I can’t understand how anyone can live there let alone bring up kids there? Anyway, we went to see the womens Barracks and a museum with the artists and composers of the time. Music played a big role in the camp and many artists died trying to reveal the conditions. The town was like a morgue and the main park (Marktplatz) which was part of Hitler’s beautifying process was barren with yellow grass and very few flowers. We found a pension and had a great lunch there and then headed to the crematorium with the gas chambers. An awful and scary place. We rushed off to the other side of the town- the small fortress. This was surrounded by the ramparts so there was no escape and it was used as a prison. We walked around looking at the cells and barracks and sickroom and SS offices. There was the most hectic tunnel of 500m we had to walk through which led to the execution area. This was really scary and I couldn’t wait to get out of there- it went on forever. It was an interesting day but very sad. We got back to Prague and walked around, had dinner and trekked back to the pension.
