11 January, 2007

We have decided to stay until the 13th, isn’t that great? We started our day by finding another hotel for our final night, our one is fully booked. We actually found one right next door- how convenient?! Anyway, we took the bus to Pearl Harbor and that cost $2 each. We got off at the USS Arizona Memorial which is the final resting place for many of the ship’s 1177 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. This memorial was built to honor those who died in the attack in Pearl Harbor. We walked around the museum and then we watched a 30 minute movie with live footage. Everyone then got on a boat and we were taken to the memorial site which is situated over the sunken battleship, just like a bridge. It was all very interesting and then we got back with our bus transfer in time to basque in the last bit of sunshine watching all the surfers coming in. The air is so fresh and clean and there is a certain feel of pristine cleanliness on the island. We decided to have the macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi fish for dinner since it was on all the menus- it was quite good. There is an American feel here if you know what I mean but it is not quite American. As Rich says it is where East meets West – Midway. The town remains very pretty even though there are loads of skyscraper hotels and apartments all over the show. The traditional old houses are few and far between but we did spot some on our walk today.
