12 March, 2007

We decided to leave the little town of La Fortuna since the weather was still very cloudy and there was little chance of seeing this volcano oozing with red-hot lava. We had a delicious strawberry smoothie with some of the left-over strawberries we had purchased on the road the other day and off we went to Monteverde (the mountains). The whole trip is described as a ‘jeep boat jeep’ transfer and this is the mode of transport. We started in a minivan which was fairly comfortable and then we moved on to a ferry boat and we crossed a river to make the journey a bit shorter and then we did a bit of a hike with our luggage and got into another minivan. We drove on really bad roads, dusty and sandy and bumpy for about 2 hours until we reached Santa Elena. We were recommended a place called Sleepers by a fellow traveler and so we got the driver to drop us off there. When we first arrived we were a bit shocked because it looked like nothing from the outside. However, it was clean and we even had a bay window with a view across the valley. The place is run by two brothers and they really work hard and just try to make a living. We checked in and went for lunch to the local ‘soda’ where we met a couple who were just starting out on their around the world trip. We were very jealous and we had a long chat with them. We got back just in time and it started to pour with rain. We did our laundry and relaxed at the hotel for the rest of the afternoon. Rich was really exhausted and we needed time out. I think that the torrential downpour was a way of the G-d’s above telling us we need a break and we need to chill out and stay put! We missed the evening hike that we were planning on doing and instead, once the rain subsided, we went for a delicious fish dinner with some friends from the UK. I had sea bass with an avo sauce- spectacular. We got to bed early since the whole town was asleep by the time we left the restaurant. I think that people generally wake up early and go to bed early so that they can make the most of the daylight hours. We are not early birds and so we have to try and have some early nights.
