25 February, 2007

We walked along the colonial style houses, very run down and dilapidated as we made our way to another beach called Playa Caribe. This was the swimming beach and it was far cleaner. There were no waves at all and we spent most of the day lying in the sun brushing up on our tans. Rich is starting to blend in with the South Americans, in fact he is getting darker than most of them. The afternoon heat was too intense and so we got back to the hotel hammocks, lay in the cool breeze and relaxed some more! One could actually become an icicle in a hammock with a beer in one hand and a book in another.
We went to the beach for sunset and it was really pretty and quiet since it was Sunday and the town was dead, everything was closed. We went to the same restaurant for dinner, had a lovely fish grill to share and walked back to our ‘smart’ hotel in the warm evening breeze. It was still early so we decided to watch a DVD but as we were midway there was sudden music really loud coming from downstairs. It was an accordion and guitar player together with a singer and there was some kind of celebration in the courtyard. The music was festive and it was different but that was the end of watching the DVD. It was a really morbid, depressing movie anyway, called World Trade Centre and everyone was suffering and dying. What a contradiction it was here; everyone celebrating and enjoying life.
Juan Griego is a small town but actually is the second biggest city on Isla Margarita. It is a fisherman’s town and it isn’t very popular amongst the tourists. Everything closes early and on a Sunday the only shops that are open are the bottle stores and the Venezuelans start drinking their cerveza early in the morning. A town with character!
