12 April, 2007

We had an average breakfast at the Praiano Hotel in Fortaleza and then we took a walk along the promenade to Praia de Iracema, a part of the city that really thrives at night with pubs and restaurants. It was very quiet and so we walked back to our hotel and decided to go the other way to Fortuna beach- 5km away. The start of the walk was very pretty and then we got to the industrial zone…say no more. We walked and walked and eventually after 4 km we got to a dead end. We had to either walk in a dodgy side road or turn back. So, we got the bus back to Meireles and went straight to the beach for a swim and a drink. The water was so warm and the waves were perfect. We moved to another beach café and had some lunch with a few drinks too many. We were so relaxed and we made our way to the hotel to shower and pack for the bus. The hotel gave us a very late check-out- it was great. We left at about 17h30 on the bus to Jericoacoara (pronounced Jeri-kwah-kwah-rah). We didn’t really sleep and it took about 6 hours to get to a little town called Jujuka. From there we all got onto an open truck and it took another hour of driving along the coast and on the sand dunes in the pitch dark until we reached ‘Jeri’. We arrived at Pousada de Norte the one we had booked into, at about 1am and the fellow there spoke no English. We filled in a form, he walked us to the room and left us with the key outside the door. We fiddled in the dark to get the key in the door and had a fight with the air conditioning system. After a shower we collapsed into bed.
